If you’ve accepted Jesus Christ as Lord of your life, then you’ve been bought with a price.
How much is your life worth? $5,000? $50,000? $500,000? Or maybe a million dollars? I’m sure you’ve seen movies or even news stories where some terrorist group or kidnapper grabs someone and make a demand for a ransom to be paid or the person will be killed.
According to the Business Insider website, the greatest ransom ever paid was $60 million dollars to free Jorge and Juan Born in 1974. In today’s money that’s $293 million. That’s a lot of money, but it’s nothing compared to the price that paid for you.
The Bible paints a pretty dark picture of who you were before you came to Christ. You were dead in your trespasses and sins. You were a slave to sin and under the power of the enemy with no possible way of escape. But God, in His rich love and great mercy had a plan from before the foundations of the world to set you free.
There is only one penalty for sin and that’s death. Sin is so destructive that God says that he who sins must die. Since every person in the world sins, all are under a death penalty. But God showed that there was a way to righteously pay the debt for your sin, someone else could pay it for you. Someone else could pay the penalty for your sin and set you free from judgment.
That person would have to be free from all sin, that’s why no one born into this world could ever offer themselves in your place. They would have to pay for their own sins and could never free us. That is why the within the Trinity God decided to send His Son to be a sacrifice for your sin, so that you would not have to be spiritually separated from God and spend eternity without Him.
God loved you so much that He decided to send Jesus to pay the price for your sin. Jesus tells us,
16 “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him. (John 3:16-17)
God loved you so much that He gave you eternal life, so you could be with Him throughout eternity. The price for your freedom is the death of Jesus Christ.
Jesus was born into this world through the power of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit miraculously caused Mary to conceive and give birth to Jesus. He was not born through the natural way of birth that would make Him sinful and unable to pay the price for your sin.
Jesus was born without sin and walked in this world without sin. He always obeyed God in everything that He commanded. He was tempted in every way but never sinned. He was the only person that ever walked the earth that could pay the penalty for your sin.
When John the Baptist saw Jesus, he told his disciples, “Behold the lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!” (John 1:29).
Jesus understood that He came into the world to pay for the sins of the world. He knew that His blood would pay the ransom that would set you free from the power of the devil. Before He went to the cross He told His disciples,
For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many” (Mark 10:45).
Jesus knew that He was heading to Jerusalem, that He would be crucified, and be in the grave for three days. He wanted His followers to know that when He was taken by the officials and killed it was of His own free will. He said this in John 10:17-18,
17 For this reason the Father loves Me, because I lay down My life so that I may take it again. 18 No one has taken it away from Me, but I lay it down on My own initiative. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This commandment I received from My Father.”
Some people struggle with the thought that God would send His Son to die on the cross. They consider it to be cosmic child abuse. They say there’s no way a loving Father would ask His Son to do such a thing, but that’s not what the Bible says.
Isaiah 53:10-11 tells us,
10 But the Lord was pleasedTo crush Him, putting Him to grief; If He would render Himself as a guilt offering,He will see His offspring,He will prolong His days,And the good pleasure of the Lord will prosper in His hand.11 As a result of the anguish of His soul,He will see it and be satisfied;By His knowledge the Righteous One,My Servant, will justify the many,As He will bear their iniquities.
In John 15:13 Jesus tells the disciples, “Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends.” Jesus is saying this on the night that He was going to be betrayed and lay down His life for you.
Hebrews 12:2 lets us know why Jesus was willing to go to the cross. Why did He deal with all the shame, pain, and terror of the cross?
fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
What was His joy? Saving you. Jesus endured the cross because of you. Your value is more than you know. You have been bought with the most expensive ransom of all: the pure, shed blood of Jesus Christ.
8 knowing that you were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your futile way of life inherited from your forefathers, 19 but with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ. (1 Peter 1:18-19)
14 how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without blemish to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? (Heb 9:14)
Jesus proved His love for you by going to the cross. Your life is so precious to Him that He was willing to die to save you.
The perfection of God’s plan was that Jesus would not remain in the grave. Death had no power over one who was sinless. God raised Jesus from the dead and gave you the resurrection power of the Holy Spirit in your life so you could have eternal life and live with God forever.
Don’t forget that Jesus felt you so valuable that He would send the Holy Spirit to seal your life as down payment of all the promises to come.
The Holy Spirit loves you so much that He is willing to indwell your life and empower you with His strength.
Just remember that you’re the most valuable thing ever purchased in this world. Your cost, the blood of Jesus.
