Who You Are in Christ – You Are a Friend of God

If you’ve accepted Jesus Christ as Lord in your life and you’re walking in His ways, then you’re a friend of God. What a privilege that God allows us to be His friend.

Listen to what Jesus says to the disciples on the night He was betrayed. He said,

14 You are My friends if you do what I command you. 15 No longer do I call you slaves, for the slave does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I have heard from My Father I have made known to you. (John 15:14-15)

He called His disciples friends. Jesus doesn't consider you to be His slave. He counts you a His friend. That’s exciting. That’s incredible.

Now we know there are different meanings to the word friend. I remember many years ago in Bible college. We were having a concert with a well-known singer. One of the young ladies in the college got to spend some time with her before the performance. The next day she came into class and was speaking like they were best of friends.

That’s not the kind of friendship I’m talking about. It goes much deeper than that.

When Jesus uses the word friend, it means a person whom one loves and trusts, a close companion or comrade. Jesus is talking about being close and intimate with Him because we walk with Him and He reveals the things the Father revealed to Him. Now that’s close.

Jesus is your friend and wants to reveal the things of the Father to you. He doesn’t want to keep you in the dark.

The reason He’s willing to reveal these things to you is because you’re walking with Him. He said if you do what I command, then you are My friend. That makes a lot of sense.  Jesus knows our heart of friendship by our willingness to follow Him.

He is Lord and could easily command you to do whatever He wants without any explanation whatsoever. But that is not the way He wants it to be. He wants you to be His friend. He wants you know the Father’s heart.

He is willing to reveal these thing because He loves and trusts you. He has called you and wants you to have insight into what you are doing.

When God was getting ready to bring judgment down on Sodom and Gomorrah, He said,

17 The Lord said, “Shall I hide from Abraham what I am about to do, 18 since Abraham will surely become a great and mighty nation, and in him all the nations of the earth will be blessed? 19 For I have chosen him, so that he may command his children and his household after him to keep the way of the Lord by doing righteousness and justice, so that the Lord may bring upon Abraham what He has spoken about him.”

God didn’t bring judgment upon the land that He had promised Abraham until He talked with Him about it. Abraham was a friend of God and because of Abraham’s call, He wanted to talk with Him about it.

God is you friend and wants to talk to about what is taking place in your life, your family, you city, state, and nation. He wants to let you know things that are going down so you can intercede like Abraham did for the people of the land.

Don’t forget that Abraham's intercession saved the life of Lot and his two daughters. Your prayers are as effective as those of Abraham for you are a friend of God.

God wants to speak to you and reveal himself to you like He did with Adam and Eve in the garden. He would show up in the cool of the day and spend time with them. God wants to speak with you like He did to Moses:

Thus the Lord used to speak to Moses face to face, just as a man speaks to his friend (Exodus 33:11)

Psalm 25:14 says,

The secret of the Lord is for those who fear Him, And He will make them know His covenant.

You are a friend of God. He loves you and wants to be with to share the intimate things of the Father.

Take a few moments throughout the day to stop and listen. Be like Samuel and say to the Lord, speak because your friend is listening.
