Of all the truths God speaks over your life, this one carries tremendous power: you are a new creation in Christ. It’s so important as a believer in Christ to get your identity from God and who He says you are and not from the world around you. There is only one place you can go to discover who God says you are, and that’s the Bible.
What You Are A New Creation In Christ Really Means
The Bible is God revealing His truth to you. Without it, you could never really know for sure who God is and who you are in Him. But God wants you to know Him. He wants you to know how special you are to Him and all of the incredible things that are yours because of Jesus Christ.
Today, we’ll see that in Christ You Are a New Creation. When you came to Christ, a creative miracle took place in your life. You are not the same person as you once were.
The Apostle Paul gives you a glimpse into the amazing change that took place in your life the moment you put your faith in Jesus. He says in 2 Corinthians 5:17:
Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature, the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.
The Truth About Being A New Creation
There are three important truths you must understand from this passage. The first truth is that you are a new creature.
You might be thinking, “Wait a minute! I thought you said I was a new creation.”
Hey, good catch. You are a new creation. When you accepted Jesus, God did a creative work in you. He made you a new creature.
You are a brand new person. Something powerful took place inside of you. Before you came to Jesus, you were spiritually dead. When you accepted Jesus, God performed a brand-new act of creation and made you spiritually alive.
What God Did to Make You A New Creation
You have the same body you had before coming to Jesus. You have the same soul as your thoughts, emotions, and will. But there is one huge difference in you now. God has created within you a brand new spirit.
Your spirit was not mended, rebuilt, or even improved upon. It is a brand new creation by God through the power of the Holy Spirit.
The second truth is that old things have passed away. It’s like having shabby, filthy clothing and someone gives you brand new, top-of-the-line clothes designed specially for you. You throw the old clothes into the trash and put on your new clothes.
God wants you to know that you are not the person you used to be. The old you has passed away. You no longer have to live the way you did in the past. Sin doesn’t have to rule and reign in your life. You now have the ability to change because you’re a new creation.
You Now Have the Ability to Change Because You're a New Creation
In Romans 6:6-7, the apostle Paul says:
Knowing this, that your old self was crucified with Him, in order that our body of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin; for he who has died is free from sin.
You are a new creation in Christ, and sin no longer is your master.
You might not feel that way, but it is true and leads us to the third truth of being a new creation. New things have come.
When we come to Christ, God doesn’t just deal with the bad in our lives; He also releases to us everything that is good. In this short video, I don’t have time to go into all the incredible things that we have in Jesus, but I will share a few to whet your appetite.
Here are some of the incredible gifts the Bible says are available to us in Christ:
- Every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places
- Adoption as sons and daughters
- Peace with God
- Eternal life in this life and the life to come
- Everything pertaining to life and godliness
- An inheritance, which is imperishable, and undefiled, and will not fade away, reserved in heaven
In other words, we have everything we need to live life as God intends it to be.
The old things are gone, and we don’t need them because God has given us so many good things. We no longer need to scavenge through the garbage for our old, filthy clothes. God has provided us with a walk-in closet full of every good gift. Start looking for the gift.
The next time you stand in front of a mirror, remind yourself that you are a new creation. Go ahead and do it. You may feel funny, but you’ll be telling yourself the truth.
